Photofacial Q & A

What is a photofacial?

A photofacial uses the power of intense pulsed light (IPL) to reverse common signs of aging, particularly those that have to do with uneven skin tone. As light passes through the top layer of skin, dark patches or red spots are eliminated. This type of treatment can be used on problem areas like the fact, neck, chest, arms, or legs.

The WWFM Center team uses the ICON™ and Elite+™ lasers to deliver outstanding results from photofacials.

What problems can a photofacial treat?

The conditions that respond most efficiently to photofacial treatment include:

  • Age spots and sun spots
  • Hyperpigmentation from acne scars or rosacea
  • Moles, birthmarks, or freckles

The treatment is also effective for spider veins, which often occur on the legs or the face due to improper blood flow.

What happens during a photofacial?

Your practitioner prepares your skin for the treatment, which may involve a light cleansing or sterilization. They run a small, handheld laser over the treatment area in gentle strokes. You may feel slight pressure or a tingling sensation as the laser reacts with your skin. Usually, a treatment only takes about 30 minutes or less, depending on the size and number of areas being treated.

Most people can resume their normal activities right after a treatment session, so there is no downtime or recovery. The treated area might feel slightly tender to the touch for a few hours.

What results can I expect with a photofacial?

Some people notice immediate results with a photofacial treatment session. However, it’s normal to need several treatments to achieve the best results. After a photofacial, your dark spots or patches may turn darker in color and flake off, revealing fresh skin underneath.

How can I maintain my results after a photofacial?

Some people may be naturally prone to develop dark spots or freckles in the same areas, so it’s important to take good care of your skin after a photofacial. This involves wearing sunscreen, moisturizing, staying away from cigarette smoke or environmental pollutants, and eating a balanced diet.
